Israeli Strikes Kill Nine in Southern Lebanon

(MENAFN) At least nine people were killed and several others wounded across southern Lebanon Wednesday in a wave of Israeli airstrikes, among them a Lebanese Army soldier and three paramedics, according to Lebanese sources.

The Islamic Health Authority confirmed that paramedic Yahya Ayash, from the town of Harouf, was killed after an Israeli drone targeted an ambulance crew that had been evacuating casualties from Zebdine following an earlier strike. The organization added that a second paramedic sustained wounds in the same attack, while two injured civilians being transported inside the ambulance also lost their lives.

In a separate incident in Chehour, an Israeli strike struck an ambulance directly, killing two paramedics and leaving a third in critical condition, according to Lebanon's Public Health Emergency Operations Center.

The strikes come despite an April ceasefire agreement — one that Israel has continued to disregard through near-daily military operations in Lebanon, while Hezbollah has simultaneously pressed forward with attacks on Israeli military positions.

Israeli army chief Eyal Zamir appeared to confirm the military's posture Wednesday, stating during a visit to the Israeli Navy's Haifa base that no ceasefire exists for Israeli troops operating in Lebanon. In remarks included in an Israel Defense Forces statement, he added that the military is working to maximize the operational freedom at its disposal and will exploit every opportunity to neutralize threats to Israeli civilians and soldiers alike.

The human cost of the prolonged campaign is mounting sharply. Lebanese health authorities reported that the cumulative death toll from Israeli attacks on Lebanon between March 2 and June 3 had climbed to 3,516 killed and 10,674 injured.
