Iran Sets New Shipping Rules in Strait of Hormuz Amid Us Standoff
(MENAFN) Iran has introduced a new mechanism regulating ship movements through the Strait of Hormuz during ongoing tensions with the United States over control of the key maritime route, according to reports.
A state-run Press reported Tuesday that under the new system, vessels planning to pass through the strait receive an email from an address associated with the Persian Gulf Strait Authority (PGSA), outlining transit requirements.
Ships must then follow the specified regulations before being granted permission to continue their passage, the report added.
The measure comes as Iran increases oversight of maritime traffic in the strategically important waterway, through which a large portion of global oil shipments flows.
According to reports, Tehran has tightened navigation rules in the Strait of Hormuz since the outbreak of conflict involving the US and Israel on Feb. 28, amid rising regional tensions and competing claims over maritime security.
Recent Iranian statements indicate that vessels are now required to adhere to designated routes and obtain official authorization before transiting the strait, while the United States has deployed naval forces in the region to support commercial shipping operations.
