Iran Unveils New Hormuz Transit Regulation Mechanism

(MENAFN) Iran has unveiled a formal new transit regulation mechanism for vessels navigating the Strait of Hormuz, a state broadcaster reported Tuesday — a significant escalation in Tehran's assertion of control over one of the world's most critical energy corridors.

Under the newly introduced framework, ships seeking passage through the strait receive an email from an address affiliated with the Persian Gulf Strait Authority (PGSA), notifying them of applicable transit rules. Vessels must demonstrate compliance with the outlined regulations before a transit permit is granted, according to the report.

The Strait of Hormuz serves as the primary export artery for a substantial portion of global oil supplies, making any shift in its governance framework an issue of acute concern for international energy markets and maritime operators alike.

Tehran has been steadily tightening its grip on navigation through the waterway since the outbreak of the US-Israeli conflict on Feb. 28, with escalating tensions prompting competing assertions of authority over maritime access in the region. Iranian officials have made clear in recent statements that commercial vessels must adhere to designated transit corridors and secure prior authorization before entering the strait.

In a direct counter-posture, Washington has bolstered its naval presence in the region to safeguard the passage of commercial shipping — setting the stage for a prolonged and potentially volatile standoff over who ultimately controls one of the planet's most strategically vital chokepoints.
