US Deploys Armada of Warships Near Iran

(MENAFN) The United States has positioned a substantial naval and military force in the Middle East, signaling heightened pressure on Tehran while maintaining a stance that diplomacy is still possible.

Earlier this month, President Donald Trump reportedly came close to authorizing strikes against Iranian targets after the country’s recent violent crackdown on protests that left thousands dead, according to reports from human rights organizations. While he ultimately delayed any action, military reinforcements continue to be dispatched to the region.

Speaking in an interview, Trump described the situation as “in flux.” “We have a big armada next to Iran. Bigger than Venezuela,” he said, referencing the U.S. naval buildup near the South American country that led to the capture of its leader. He added that Iran has shown willingness to negotiate, stating, “They called on numerous occasions. They want to talk.”

Central to the deployment is the USS Abraham Lincoln aircraft carrier strike group, accompanied by guided-missile destroyers and additional fighter jets, including F-15s and F-35s. Refueling tankers and air defense systems have also been positioned to support operations. U.S. military officials emphasized that these forces provide both deterrence and rapid-response capability in the region.

In response, senior Iranian military officials issued stern warnings. General Mohammad Pakpour of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps stated that Iran’s forces are “more ready than ever, finger on the trigger,” promising “painful” consequences for any aggression by the U.S. or its allies. Tehran has publicly cautioned Washington against “any miscalculations,” attributing the internal unrest in Iran to outside interference. Iranian authorities reported that over 3,000 people were killed during the recent protests.

The situation underscores a tense standoff, with both sides signaling readiness for escalation while leaving a diplomatic path open, even as the risk of confrontation remains high.
